Island Passport: Lover's Leap

Off the beaten path to a small district called Yardley Chase one will find a local Attraction called Lovers Leap, where the legend of Tunkey and Mizzy still lives on. Lovers Leap is located on a majestic cliff with a drop of approximately 1700 ft. The views are breathtaking and constantly mesmerizes visitors.

Lovers Leap has a restaurant, a semi museum filled with historical artifacts and photographs, a wooden statue replicating Tunkey and Mizzy, a lighthouse and a legendary tale. The story whilst tragic is very alluring. There is a trail that is approximately three miles that leads down to Cutlass Bay, however, whilst, wonderful for a picnic, the water is extremely rough and not suited for swimming.

Legend has it that two slaves from the Yardley Plantation were in love, however, the master wanted the girl for himself and arranged for the male slave to be sent away. The two lovers refused to be separated, this is where it gets a bit tricky as one version of the legend states that they jumped together and the other version states that Tunkey was badly beaten and tossed over the cliff and then Mizzy unable to bear life without him jumped to her death to be with him. However, the tale goes the fact is they both plunged approximately 1700ft from atop the cliffs down to Cutlass Bay and two stumps marks the spot where they jumped from.

The lighthouse at Lovers Leap is the most modern one built and is powered by three energy sources and that is battery, electricity and a generator. This lighthouse still operates to guide sailors safely in the night to shore.

The panoramic views from Lovers Leap are beyond breathtaking as majestic mountains sweep down to sandy shores to meet with turquoise seas. Its extremely hard to differentiate where the ocean meet the horizon, however, once there, the memory of the view will last a lifetime and beyond.

Remember to add Lovers Leap to your bucket list, you'll be sure to enjoy it, we definitely did!!!
