Portland is considered to be Jamaica's French Riviera.... Its lush tropical flora and fauna will lure you into its midst with its majestic mountain range sweeping down into the Caribbean sea where the bejeweled turquoise tones mesmerize you like a sea siren. Portland's rich history starts from the days when banana was the parish's main export that is when Banana was King, the sheer opulence that is nestled between the lush vegetation makes it understandable why Errol Flynn made Portland his Mistress... Come with us as we explore the wonders of Portland's Blue Lagoon...
The Blue Lagoon in Portland is considered to be one of Jamaica's natural wonders. Its is fed by natural springs and merges with the ocean via a somewhat narrow channel to give swimmers a mixture of salt and fresh water. The melding temperatures i.e. warmth from the ocean and cold from the fresh water springs is one of the best forms of hydrotherapy. It has a depth of approximately 187ft.
It is said that the area was once called "The Blue Hole", however, conflicting reports state that with the premier of the Brooke Shield's movie "The Blue Lagoon", the location had a permanent name change to "The Blue Lagoon". Also, several locals state that the area has always been named both The Blue Hole and The Blue Hole Garden. However, in the final "edict", the property still goes by both names, but, is world re-known as The Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon has been graced by the presence of locals, tourists and tons of celebrities.
The Blue lagoon appears to be somewhat magical and/ or mystical as it turquoise waters tend to change colour through the day depending on the angle of the sun and where you are located whilst looking at it. There isn't much to do in terms of activities as the restaurant had been destroyed previously by a hurricane and apart from swimming one can go on either boat rides or raft rides.
