The Bull Head Mountains is a part of the Jamaica Forest Reserve and stands approximately 3600ft high, with its peak considered to be the center of Jamaica. The mountain got its name because it appears to be shaped like the head of a bull. The Bull Head Mountain is suitable for hiking and camping.
If one is able to make the trek to the peak, then one would be able to see the beauty of Jamaica's South Coast. On a clear day one is able to see as far as Manchester and St. Elizabeth, to be more specific one will be able to see the two now defunct bauxite plants i.e. Windalco in Manchester and Alpart in St. Elizabeth.
To begin the Lenten Season, thousands of visitors make the trek to the annual Ash Wednesday Bash held there which is considered to be a hiking and camping celebration. At this festival, one is able to experience the Kids Village (children are able to go on rides, have fun with clowns etc), Jamaican Food & Beverage, and Music. This annual event has been held for over 25 years and continues to grow each year. There is no charge to attend the event, however, refreshments are on sale.
The Bull Head Sojourn is not for the faint of heart and four wheels drives are the advised transportation for that trip. However, you will need proper hiking and/ or walking shoes, food, water and comfortable clothing.
As I continue to promote Eco based and Community Tourism I implore everyone to take a trip to the Bull Head Mountains, I guarantee that you won't regret it.
