Off The Beaten Path: Alligator Hole

Located on the coast road in the Canoe Valley Forest Reserve and/ or Wetlands is a little "rest stop" called Alligator Hole. Alligator Hole is home to crocodiles (the only alligators in Jamaica are located at the zoos and/ or sanctuaries), fish, cray fish and best of all Manatees (Sea Cow).

Alligator Hole is a river lined with mangroves that exits down to the sea (Farquhar's Beach). The main attractions there are the three manatees who were captured eons ago and then released after years in captivity, but, they still remained there even though they were set free. To see these manatees its best to go early morning i.e. before 6am or late evening after 5pm. There are guides there who can take you on a boat ride to see them for a small tip.

The other activity is the resource center that is located there. The resource center is rarely opened, however, if you are lucky to go in. there is a wide range of information in there telling you the wonders of the river and its environs.

Please note that this road is somewhat lonely and there are no gas stations, limited cell service, rough terrain in sections and did I mention..... "lonely".

Have fun, I know that we did!
