Welcome to the Church in the Wildwoods

"Oh, come, come, come, come, Come to the Church in the Wildwoods, Oh come to the Church in the Vale. No spot is so dear to my childhood, as the little brown Church in the Vale." -  Dr. William S. Pitts, 1857.

Everytime I hear those lyrics I remember the local Church in the Wildwoods in Mile Gully, Manchester; it's infamously known as the Duppy Church. Once you visit the parish of Manchester in Jamaica and you ask locals about the Duppy Church or the Church in the Wildwoods you will hear many tales associated with it, all involving the "proverbial duppies".

The Church in the Wildwoods or the Duppy Church as its affectionately called is approximately 10 to 15 minutes from the Mile Gully Square. The name of the abandoned church is the St George's Anglican Church.  Legend has it that the members of the congregation had to leave because the "Duppies" were making it impossible for church services to be held. St. Simon's Anglican Church located in Mile Gully is said to be where most members have relocated.

The church yard consists of several graves, some which are in dire need of repairs. The building itself has an eerie feel to it, with missing windows, doors, furniture, and infrastructure in general. However, its an interesting location steeped in history and shrouded with mystery.

  1. It's as if the walls of this building want to tell a story

    1. They do tell stories, but, you have to be brave enough to listen
